Raul Meireles seeking Premier League return

Former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles reportedly wants to return to the Premier League before he retires, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The 34-year old has been linked with West Brom, Swansea, Leicester and Watford, as well as various Italian clubs, and the Premier League is his preferred destination. The former Portugal international enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea, scoring a stunning goal in the quarterfinal of 2012 Champions League against Benfica. The Blues went on to win the tournament that year, beating Bayern Munich in the final.

Meireles enjoyed a four-year spell at Turkish club Fenerbahçe following his departure from the Premier League, during which time he helped the Istanbul-based side clinch a Super Lig title. The midfielder is currently a free agent, but with so many clubs reportedly interested it appears likely that he will return to the Premier League.

On the international stage Meireles has also experienced success, earning 73 caps for the Portugal senior team and representing his country in two World Cups, two European Championships and an Olympic Games. Portugal reached the semi-finals of Euro 2012, a tournament in which Meireles started five games, and this is the closest the midfielder has come to international success at senior level.
